About

Increasing diverse faculty leadership within the academy is a critical aspiration for all universities.

Although the United States is growing increasingly racially and ethnically diverse, most faculty positions continue to be held by white male professors. This lack of diversity is even more obvious among faculty leaders, such as provosts and deans. In fact, a 2013 American Council on Education study found that only 14 percent of senior leaders at four-year institutions were faculty of color.

In light of these data, Northeastern University applied for and received a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for a program designed to expand and synergize two existing programs – Northeastern University’s Research Development Leadership Initiative (ReDI) and the Boston-Wide Women of Color in the Academy Network. Collaboration with leadership at six other Boston institutions led to the creation of consortium focused on offering leadership program designed to develop diverse leaders within member institutions.

Consortium

Seven institutions form consortium and representatives serve on the Oversight Committee which is critically involved in planning and implementing the leadership program. Faculty participants will be selected from these seven institutions:

  • Boston University
  • Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Northeastern University
  • Suffolk University
  • Tufts University
  • University of Massachusetts Boston
